Port Manager (Hastings)

We are currently seeking a Port Manager, to come into the business and take on leadership and management of Pesky’s operation in our new site in Hastings.

About Pesky

Pesky Fish is reinventing the seafood supply chain to create a more sustainable industry for fish, fishermen and consumers. We are currently delivering the country’s fastest, freshest fish (as little as 6 hours to London), returning £1,000s of incremental value to local fishermen every week.

We are a team of 25 (and growing!), we work with a fleet of over 30 boats landing their catch to us across the South West, North East and now the South Eastern coast.

How you will add huge value to our team and our customers

Every day we receive landings from the boats in our fleet. As the manager of Pesky’s Hastings site, with the assistance of your team you will be responsible for delivering;

Planning & Scheduling

Communicating with boats, using weather forecasts and other factors to create the port’s forecast for the next 3-5 days. Scheduling working rosters for your team, updating our systems and communicating with the wider Pesky team to allow our sales team to plan with customers effectively in advance.

Landings & Grading

Receiving fish from boats, you will weigh and categorise (target within <60 mins of arrival), to Pesky’s species, size and quality categories – with exceptional attention to detail. Using our computer systems, you’ll ensure that all data logs are correct and accurate against the landed fish. This is manual handling work, and requires heavy lifting.

Stock Management

Graded fish needs to be stored logically and with excellent labelling, ready for dispatch after our daily market. You’ll ensure excellent storage management, allowing all boxes to be picked and fulfilled easily.

Packing & Dispatch

While some fish is sent directly to our fulfilment centre once graded, a proportion of landed fish is prepared into customer-ready consignments. Involves selecting and weighing fish, recording weight information, filleting and packing with excellent presentation.

Boat Relations

Recruiting and retaining local skippers to land their catch to Pesky. As a company working on behalf of fishermen (not the other way round), you will work to ensure our proposition for boats to land their catch through is unrivalled.

Health, Safety and Food Hygiene

Working with Pesky’s technical manager, lead the local team by example to deliver full compliance to food safety standards. Assisting with HACCPs, working to achieve accreditation certificates and ensuring all activities carried out are done so safety and effectively (through risk assessments and staff training).

Site Running and Upkeep

Ensure that all components of the business processes are in place and delivered daily to run a smooth operation. Including all deliveries (mostly early morning), consumable ordering, light maintenance and managing of contractors as required.

Local Relations

As the face of Pesky in Hastings, cultivate relationships with all local industry bodies and contacts. Including the Hastings fleet protection society, local wholesalers, fishermen and local MMO/CEFAS representatives.

Personality and Experience

  • Have substantial experience managing small teams within a food handing operation, with seafood processing strongly desired.
  • Be flexible, a fast learner and very hands-on. Pesky is a fast-growing start-up with a small enthusiastic team, so you will often find yourself jumping on board with other tasks.
  • Be friendly and enthusiastic. You will have daily encounters with our boats when receiving fish, acting as the face of Pesky, and will need to build positive and strong relationships with them.
  • Hold a full clean UK driving license, with no previous convictions or penalty points.
  • Be computer literate, with experience of emails, MS Excel and Word, and ideally a pervious understanding of supply chain/order management systems.
  • Innovative and creative; we are tackling an industry full of inefficiencies, and there are plenty of problems to solve. Including but not limited to packaging, transport methods, grading methods and systems…

A few more details

The site manager role requires significant time flexibility, but consists mostly of managing activity during the early hours through to late mornings/early afternoon, Sunday-Friday. Residing close to Hastings is strongly desirable, or own transport essential for commuting applicants.

  • £28k-33k.
  • 24 days holiday per year, plus bank holidays.
  • Main operating hours from Sunday AM to Friday AM (subject to variation)
  • Chance to work as part of a fast paced, super dynamic start-up.
  • Access to the freshest fish possible!
